Job Description

Job Title : Sailor
Reports to : Boatswain
Grade : RG 8

JOB PURPOSE: To contribute extensively to the operational efficiency and safety of the ship

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Implement logistics support and material plan to manage advance shipment of
    hazardous goods to area of responsibility.
  2. Perform watch duties, including looking out for navigational hazards and monitoring
    the ship’s position at sea.
  3. Handle deck operations such as mooring and anchoring to ensure all activities are
    carried out safely and efficiently.
  4. Maintain the cleanliness and general upkeep of the deck, including painting,
    sweeping and washing
  5. Assist with the loading and unloading of cargo, equipment and supplies, adhering to
    set protocols to safeguard against damage.
  6. Participate in emergency drills and responding to emergencies, including manoverboard
  7. operations, firefighting and first aid.
  8. Utilize deck machinery and equipment, as well as performing routine checks to
    ensure they are in sound working condition.

Qualifications and Experience
At least Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent and the following maritime
training;

  1. National Certificate of Competence Reg I/2, II/5
  2. Basic Safety Training VI/1 (Achieved within previous five (5) years)
    a. Personal Survival Techniques
    b. Fire prevention and firefighting
    c. Elementary First Aid
    d. Personal Safety and Social responsibilities
  3. Medical fitness I/9
  4. Training onboard
    a. Basic safety familiarization
    b. Ship specific familiarization
    c. Security familiarization

Competences
a) Meet the requirements for certification as a rating forming part of a navigational
watch.
b) Seagoing service: have completed 18 months approved seagoing service in the
deck department, or 12 months and completed approved training.
c) Education & training: onboard training documented in a training book or
approved training ashore with a minimum of 12 months sea service.
d) Competence: meet the standard of competence specified in section A-II/5.
