Job Purpose
To ensure safety for network plant / equipment and lives on occurrence of power system faults / abnormalities and on operation of apparatus; by correctly installing and maintaining protection schemes, local / remote apparatus controls and voltage regulation systems on the UEDCL network; in accordance with the relevant standards or as guided by the engineer.
Impact: The Protection and Communication Technician ensures that the safety of the equipment and lives of the teams in the organization are protected through the installation, testing and training on proper usage of the safety equipment.
Key Result Areas
- Install Protection, Control and Voltage regulation schemes and participate in the Pre-commissioning test team
- Update drawings, mark revisions and forward to system planning section
- Make installation alterations as may be required following post-commission evaluations.
- Carry out maintenance of protection, control and voltage regulation equipment according to equipment manuals, section established procedures and standards
- Carry out post fault evaluation activities including site access.
- Repair protection, control and voltage regulation equipment reported faulty by applying fault finding techniques to determine the cause of the failure and correcting it.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs ICS/SCADA systems, including hardware, software, and HMIs, and develops reports.
- Provide online guidance to distribution staff on the operations of protection equipment and apparatus controls.
- Perform all administrative related duties pertaining to standards, works orders and legal requirements.
- Carry out maintenance on protection equipment and tools according to equipment / tool manuals, section procedures and standards.

Person Specifications
Minimum Academic Qualifications
- Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering
- Other qualifications and certification in electrical protection systems is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 year of experience in power system protection related activities
Competencies
- In depth knowledge and understanding of Power system protection technology, with technical skills.
- Accredited to intermediate level on protection equipment.
- Innovative thinking skills.
- Curiosity / Information Seeking
- Valid driver license.
- Ability to integrate effectively with other specialist disciplines.
